Obituary for Sheila Jane Lett-Smith (Lett)

Sheila Lett Smith was born July 6, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan to Mary Jane and Henry H. Lett. She graduated from Detroit Public Schools and received a Bachelor and Masters Degrees from Michigan State University.
Her marriage to Clarence H. Street ended in divorce. She later married Ed Smith and moved to Battle Creek.
Sheila worked with Battle Creek Public Schools as a secretary at Battle Creek Central High School, Paraprofessional Counselor at W.K. Junior High School, and as a teacher for 30 years at Urbandale Elementary School.
Mrs. Smith was actively involved in Urban League, Urban League Guild, NAACP, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, Calhoun County Chapter of Michigan Association of Retired Personnel. She was a long term member of Battle Creek Housing Commission in which capacity she was instrumental in helping people obtain housing. She was also a recipient of Koyo Corporation's invitation to visit schools and businesses in Japan.
Sheila was an active member of Mt. Zion A.M.E Church, serving as usher, missionary, Sunday School teacher and Neighborhood Food Pantry Coordinator.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Henry H. Lett Jr., and grandson, Roderic Steven Street. She is survived by her sister, Judith Lett McReynolds, children, Sheryl Jane Street of Battle Creek, Sonia Margaret (Bruce) Rapp of Xenia, Ohio and Steven Street of Grand Rapids. Also surviving are grandsons, Steven Street and Montel Street, and great-granddaughter, Meela Street.
